Red and Blue Walkthrough!

When the game starts you will find yourself in your house: no Pokémon, no Pokédex, nothing. Go to the computer (make sure it's not the Super Nintendo!) and withdraw the Potion, you may need it later. Go downstairs and you will see your mum.

On exiting the house, you will find yourself in Pallet Town.

Don't bother looking for Professor Oak. If you go to his house and wait for him, he'll never come. Go out into the long grass and he'll stop you and bring you to his lab, where you can choose a starter Pokémon.

The Pokémon available are Squirtle (water), Bulbasaur (grass), and Charmander (fire). Many people say that Squirtle is the best, but it is your choice. If you choose Charmander, be ready for a tough time, as the early gyms can thrash fire-types. You may wish to nickname your Pokémon. I named my Bulbasaur 'Bulby' and my brother nicknamed his Squirtle 'Foamy'. Later in the game, I loved Bulby very much. I have NEVER started a new game- I'm too attached to my Pokémon!
Okay, back to the walkthrough. After you have chosen your Pokémon (in my case, Bulbasaur) it's Gary's turn. He will choose the Pokémon which is strong against yours (in my case, Charmander).

When you turn to leave, Gary will stop you and challenge you to a fight! His Pokémon will have no unfair advantages yet, as it will have no elemental attacks. You will both be at level 5, and both have one stat-reducing attack and one damaging attack. Keep on using your damaging attack while he wastes time using Growl or Tail Whip, and his Pokémon should eventually faint. Your Pokémon will grow to level 6, and you'll get a cash prize. I won? I WON! YES!
Now you can go up into the long grass. You are now in Route 1.
ROUTE 1

In this area you will find Pidgey and Rattata. You can't capture them yet, as you won't have Pokéballs, but you can fight them for experience. If you come across one, but your Pokémon is looking a bit battered, you can use the 'Run' command to escape from battle.

Make sure you talk to the first person you meet, as he will give you a Potion.

Soon enough, you should reach...
VIRIDIAN CITY

Go straight to the Pokémon Centre and get your Pokémon healed.

Next, go to the Pokémart. The assistant there will call you over and give you a parcel. Bring it back to Pallet Town and exchange it with Oak for a Pokédex. After that go back to Gary's house and talk to his sister. She will give you a map of the Pokémon World.

Return to Viridian City and buy as many Pokéballs as your pockets will hold. Catch a few Pokémon down Route 1 and maybe a couple on Route 22, where you will find both Nidoran sexes and Spearow.
Continue a little more down Route 22 and you will bump into your old friend Gary.

He will want to fight. Typical. You will probably be able to thrash him, as he will only have his starter Pokémon and a Pidgey.
Continue up, entering the school below the gym and peeking at the girl's notes and the blackboard to learn about status changes. The Gym is locked and barred, so ignore it for now. When you find the man who shows you how to catch Pokémon, inspect the tree to the left. Congratulations, you found a hidden Potion!
ROUTE 2

Here you will find Pidgey, Rattata, Weedle (in Red) and Caterpie (in Blue). There's nothing else here until you get the ability to CUT, so head straight to Viridian Forest!
VIRIDIAN FOREST

Ahh, welcome to the Forest- of DOOM! BWUAHAHAHA!
MEW appeared!
MEW chucked INSANE GUY out of WALKTHROUGH!
*ahem* Sorry about that. Welcome to the Viridian Forest! Have a little walk around, check the long grass, fight Pokémon, capture Pokémon, run away from Pokémon or fight some annoying little trainers which we have conveniently placed so that you can't avoid them. Yes, it is true that you can catch the infamous Pikachu here.
PIKACHU FANS used CHEER!
Of course you'll have to walk around for hours to find one and, if you do, it will be at a stupidly low level- so low, in fact, that you would be wasting your Pokéballs trying to capture it. I mean, who wants to walk for hours in a boring place like Viridian Forest for a tiny level 3 Pokémon, no matter how popular?
PIKACHU FANS used BOO!
